MERIT. This medal represents one of the crowning achievements of United States Medal collecting. It is an early WWII issue of the Presidential Medal for Merit instituted in late 1942 by Executive Order 9286, establishing this award as the highest civilian medal awarded for exceptional meritorious conduct by the President of the United States. This example boasts the earliest style split brooch with the ribbon passing through the center of the bar as issued in only the earliest examples. The original dull red ribbon with narrow white stripes supports a stunning rendition of the American eagle on a plinth surrounded by a blue enamel starred circle and topped by a green enameled wreath. The reverse of the medal reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FOR MERIT". CONDITION: medal shows very light wear, but obviously has been issued and worn. (02-27232/BF). NON-GUN. $1,000-1,500.
