RECONVERSION RIFLE. Cal. 40. NSN. Bbl. 36 1/2" oct. measuring 1" across the flats at muzzle. Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Top flat where marker's name is usually found marked "ELLISON BROS. / MEMPHIS, TENN". Engraved "J GOLCHER" marked trade lock w/ reconversion pan, hammer, screw & spring. Dbl. set triggers. Pin fastened half length cheekpiece stock. Brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toeplate, finger curl trigger guard, sideplate escutcheon & nose cap. Hardwood ramrod is held on iron under rib by 2 thimble & 2 brass pipes. Oval brass tag marked "J.M. DAVIS / 7970 / MEMORIAL" is attached to trigger guard. The JM Davis Firearms Museum in Claremore, OK is home to the world's largest privately held firearms collection. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers gives the following listing "ELLISON, W.W., unlocated. Percussion fullstock.". CONDITION: metal has brown patina showing surface corrosion & pitting that becomes heavy in breech area. Lock shows cleaning & retains good markings. Stock has added finish over dents, scratches & marks w/ added wood & epoxy repairs around lock & sideplate areas. Forearm tip has cracks along both sides of the bbl. channel. Toe of stock is broken w/ glue type repair. Functioning lock & triggers. Dark pitted bore w/ some remaining rifling. PROVENANCE: From the JM Davis Museum Collection. (01-19890/DS). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
