PISTOL. Overall length: 27". Blade length: 21 1/2". Cal. approx. 40. NSN. Bbl. 2". Blade has a slight fuller w/ traces of original decoration. There is a 6" false edge at the tip. Solid brass hilt w/ allegorical figures on the turned down guard. Quillon appears to be decorated w/ lion heads. Knuckle bow is centrally adorned w/ angels. Pommel cap is decorated w/ 2 busts of women & 2 squirrels. Grip has floral engraved decoration. Pistol has a 2" steel rnd. cannon style bbl. w/ an 8 pointed bore. Inline flint brass boxlock is feather decorated on the edge & is marked, ".I : HOCK : MAYNTZ". Lock is screwed to the blade w/ 2 decorated hand cut screws. Johann Anton Hock was a gunsmith & sword maker known for these combination arms from Mainz, Rheinhessen in Germany. CONDITION: blade shows heavy wear obscuring most of the etched decoration. There is significant pitting on parts of the blade. Blade has been cleaned to a medium gray mottled finish. Hilt shows expected wear w/ a pleasing mellow brass patina. Pistol holds full cock. Bore is quite dirty. (01-17191/BF). $1,600-2,200.
