This rare example of a saber bayonet was manufactured by Cook & Brothers of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was intended for use as a shotgun bayonet, but can occasionally be seen fitted to a rifle. This excavated example has an overall length of 23 1/4" with a blade length of 18 7/8". The blade has a raised medial ridge, and the hilt is solid brass with a ribbed grip. The top of the pommel is stamped with a three-digit number that is difficult to discern but appears to be "465." No scabbard. CONDITION: this excavated relic has a dark, heavily pitted, though solid, blade. The hilt is missing one side of the crossguard, and the entire spring assembly is also missing. The hilt is a bit misshaped overall and enjoys a rich, dark, lustrous patina. (02-23461/BF). $700-1,000.
