SPENCER SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 50. S# 18817. Standard configuration of the Civil War model, 20" 6 land and groove rifled barrel, adjustable rear sight, top of breech: "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". Carbine was altered so it could be shot by direct loading not using loading magazine in stock. The Stabler device uses a pivoting flange forward of trigger to activate. The only other external difference is the shape of the hammer nose. Later model 1865 Spencer carbines would have 22" barrels with three land and groove rifling. An Imperial German viewing proof stamped on barrel & breech probably captured from French in Franco Prussian War. Carbine shows almost no use. French bought great deal of surplus US carbines in late 1860s. CONDITION: extremely fine overall, barrel retains virtually all thinning blue, traces of case color balance silver/gray. Stocks are crisp with raised grain and no proofs. Mechanics crisp, bright shiny rifled bore. (01-27256/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
