RIFLE. Cal. 44. S# 3752. Deluxe Samuel Hoggson deluxe style factory engraving with deer & dog central panel on left side of silver plated frame, fiery burl walnut. This rifle has been listed in database for many years as original survivor but no comments as to engraving. This rifle conforms to other 1st models in this serial range, 4th variation (serial range approximately 3000-5000) as detailed by Henry scholar & researcher Steve Stevens: Rounded butt plate with 7/8" wide trap door, 29/32" hole bored in butt stock to accept 4 piece wooden cleaning rod, this changes smaller hole to accept the iron cleaning rod at around serial #4000, but continuing to use the rounded butt plate with 7/8" trap door to around serial #5000. Has lever latch on lower receiver tang and latch flange on rear of lever, has a milled flat along the magazine follower slot in lower front of receiver, large magazine follower with 5/8" wide finger tab, and small .095 diameter trigger retaining pin. Square back front sight blade began at about S# 1200, but this example has half moon shape which could have been reshaped or replaced. Slanted profile to stock comb, large all serif 3 9/32" barrel address which started about S# 3500, sight dovetail milled in barrel only, six groove rifling, 900 yard rear sight with no slide stop screw. Serial number stamped on following parts: barrel behind rear sight dovetail, left side of lower receiver tang, top receiver tang channel in butt stock, inside bottom edge of butt plate, shanks of both butt plate screws, the three tang screws are no longer numbered. Matching assembly numbers stamped on rounded portion of barrel under loading sleeve and on rear edge of loading sleeve. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Winchester Collector article by Dave Beck, "Variations of the Samuel J. Hoggson Engraved Henry". CONDITION: excellent overall as restored and refinished, barrel retains much of a blue finish with balance smooth plum/blue patina, crisp re-stamped barrel address and serial number 3752. Frame & buttplate are engraved in the style of other published Henrys attributed to Samuel Hoggson, restored silver plating about 90% intact, finely fit and finished figured burl stock. Crisp serial numbers were observed on the barrel, 2 buttplate screws, buttplate, stock in upper tang mortise, and lower tang of frame. Matching assembly numbers found on rotating sleeve & barrel. Mechanics are crisp, good frosted rifled bore. (01-26880/JS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-14,000.
