71 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 348 Win. S# 43282. Bbl. 24". Model 71 lever action rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1955 and subsequently master engraved by Arnold Griebel. The receiver features near full coverage engraved consisting of bordered scrollwork on either side and on the tangs, with the left side featuring a gold inlaid side portrait of a Native American and by a relief engraved settler & wagon scene, featuring foliage and mountains in the background, with the right side featuring a gold inlaid buffalo scene. Underside of the receiver exhibits matching scrollwork and is signed "ENGR. BY A. GRIEBEL". Scroll engraving extends to the lever (also featuring a knurled panel on the front of the loop), breech end of the bbl., as well as on the forearm cap. Receiver and lever exhibit a coin finish, with the bbl., 1/2 length mag. tube, forearm cap, bolt, hammer, and buttplate exhibiting a high polish finish. Gold plated trigger. Finely figured checkered European walnut forearm and hard rubber capped pistol grip buttstock, with steel buttplate featuring a large hinged trapdoor. Hooded blade front sight on diamond and dot pattern ramp with slot blank in rear dovetail. CONDITION: receiver and lever are excellent with some spots of tarnishing and age related discoloration. Blued parts are very good to excellent, with some light superficial handling marks and a small spot of wear on the left forward edge of the hammer. Proper albeit stiff manual mechanics. Bore is bright exhibiting scattered spots of light pitting and an area of consistent light to mild pitting present towards the muzzle, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Wood furniture is excellent, showing few minute superficial handling marks. An exceptionally attractive Arnold Griebel engraved Winchester Model 71. (25-4096/MLW). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.
