PERCUSSION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 22. Bbl. 7 1/2" oct. to rnd. Allen & Wheelock was a prolific mfg. making several versions of military pistols. Published reports state 700 of this revolver made early war & the US Army bought 500 off the open market in 1861 since not acquired by official ordnance contract there are no inspection markings. These 500 went to early formed Michigan cavalry regiments. Standard configuration. 14" overall. Front sight is inset pinched brass blade. Bbl. marked "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTER. MASS. US. / ALLEN'S PT'S.JAN.13 DEC.15 1857 SEPT.7 18.." Well made, sturdy pistol w/ solid iron frame w/ unique hinged triggerguard which acted as loading lever. CONDITION: fine to excellent, retaining about 1/2 its original blue finish. Losses to flaking, not wear. Grips retain most of their original varnish w/ one lg. dent on left grip edge.
