OFFICER’S CARBINE. Cal. 35. S#724. Maynard 1st model carbines were manufacture starting 1858 by Massachusetts Arms Company and several thousand were shipped to Southern states 1860-1861. Unused frames were used for private purchase sporting arms, most sporters were rifles or multi barrel sets. This example possibly made for or purchased by military officer as other makers are known for fancy grade officer’s carbines. Regardless this is beautiful example retaining most of its original case hardening and blue finish. Modifications from standard issue are high gloss flame grained select walnut stock, manual primer advancement knob, and no carbine sling ring. Otherwise, standard markings on either side of frame: "MAYNARD ARMS CO/WASHINGTON", "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS" & "MAYNARD PATENTEE/SEP. 22 1845 / MAY 27 1851 / JUNE 17 1856" on tool box. Custom fitted in brass bound select grain mahogany veneered casing compartmented for carbine, Maynard patented bullet mold, large fluted lacquered powder flask with two chargers, patented primer roll tin, about 30 brass casings and lead projectiles. CONDITION: carbine is excellent overall retaining most of its original blue and case color, mechanically crisp with bright shiny bore. Casing is very good, with several chips in veneer, mostly hidden on surfaces small surfaces between lid and case closure. Crack on lid and crack through key escutcheon. Lining has areas of soiling and wear, missing screwdriver and cartridge loading tools. All-in-all a beautiful scarce Civil War carbine. (01-22817/JS). $8,000-12,000.
