WORKTABLE WITH WRITING SLOPE. Ca. 1830, New Bedford, Massachusetts. The well-defined hinged top opening to a baize-lined writing surface with adjustable support revealing a well, pen tray and compartment for an inkwell. The case with simulated drawer for writing surface over a conforming drawer; each fitted with original brass knobs and Sandwich Glass caps. The fronts with matched mahogany veneers. The table is raised on spiral twist cylindrical blocked legs joined by a thin medial shelf with nicely shaped front edge. NOTE: Two similar examples to this table are illustrated and described in the "New Bedford Furniture Collection of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society Whaling Museum”, Elton Hall, curator.  Published by the Historical Society June 1978, figs. 11 & 12, pgs. 13-14.
