EPAULETTES. Each epaulette measures approx. 6 1/2" x 6". The epaulettes each are constructed of black wool edged w/ spiraled silver wire. The tops have 8 graduated gilded plates edged w/ acanthus leaves. The wings are covered w/ gilded interlocking chain topped by a spiraled crescent w/ central Federal eagle. Bullion wire drops descend from the top of the epaulette approx. 2 1/2". The epaulettes are typical of examples seen from the War of 1812 but are of a decidedly higher grade & construction. They are likely for a very high ranking officer of substantial means. CONDITION: silver wired borders show dark tarnish. The tops retain nearly 100% of their original gilded finish. The interlocking chain also retains substantial original gilding. The drops show a mixture of gilding & tarnish. Epaulettes show general light wear overall. (02-15653/BF). $2,000-3,000.
