Overall length: 26 1/4". Head: 8 1/2". An intensely, visually attractive pipe tomahawk likely originating w/ one of the Plains Indian tribes & dating from the mid 1800s. The head features an octagon faceted pipe bowl, egg shaped eye & 2 7/8” cutting edge. There are 2 notches cut on either side of the eye, possibly noting battle victories. The haft is truly a work of art showing brass tack decoration near the head, down the side for 12” & near the base. There is a lead/pewter mouthpiece inlaid skillfully into the butt of the haft along w/ 3 decorative lead/pewter bands primarily in the upper section of the haft. There are two 1” depressed bands between the decorative metal bands. A 6 3/4" section is cut away near the butt w/ drilled holes at either end. Areas of the haft show cross hatched decoration. CONDITION: head has a dark early patina w/ a few very tiny nicks to the cutting edge. The haft is solid & shows significant use wear. All tacks are present & show a dark patina in protected areas. Lead/pewter has a very dark, ancient, gray patina. Cross hatched decoration is worn away in scattered areas. (02-13420/BF). $2,500-4,000.
