ENGINEERS SABER. Overall length: 39 1/4". Blade length: 32 5/8". This is an extremely rare version of a US Topographical Engineer officer's saber. The blade has a quill back similar to the M1833. It is etched over 2/3 of its length with various foliate, military & patriotic motifs. The etching includes a lg. panel that reads, "United States Corps of Topographical Engineers". Other motifs include an Indian with tomahawk, American eagles, a tent & sprays of arms. The ricasso is marked with a king's head indicating mfg. by Gebruder Weyersberg near Solingen, Germany. The hilt is in the style of an M1840 dragoon saber & has a 2 branch guard joining the knuckle bow 2/3 of the way to the pommel. Plain pommel & guard with wire wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with scattered areas of light discoloration. Grip shows wear on the high points revealing cord underneath. Scabbard has some oxidation to the surface & 5 dents near the drag. (02-19388/BF). $4,000-6,000.
