TO OBERST LUDWIG HEILMANN FOR THE SWORDS TO THE KNIGHTS CROSS. This finely produced document awards Swords to Ludwig Heilmann on 15 Mai 1944 for his Knights cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. The 16 3/4' x 13 1/2" gold highlighted white leather covered frame holds a gold and red embossed document with a sight size of 14 1/2" x 11". This frame is held in an elaborate gold and white leather covered case with a gilded brass geometrically decorated 2 " border on all sides and a large gilded brass eagle, perched on a wreath that surrounds a party symbol, in the center. This stunning case is, in turn, held in a fitted cloth covered folding hardcase. The lot includes a period photograph of General Heilmann wearing his award. The Swords were awarded to Heilmann when he was a Colonel, but he attained the rank of Major General on 22 December 1944. He was at first a Wehrmacht officer, but transferred to the Luftwaffe on 1 August of 1940. He was best known as the commander of the 3rd and 5th Fallschirmjager Divisions. He was known as a brave and very competent leader with several awards including the "KRETA" cuff title. The General was captured by American forces during the Ardennes Offensive on 5 March 1945. Upon close examination of this artifact, we feel it is quite likely a museum quality reproduction from the post WWII years. Please feel free to examine this item in person and form your own opinion. CONDITION: the document, presentation case, and the storage case all show very light wear. (02-25114/BF). NON-GUN. $1,200-1,800.
