PRESIDENTIAL LETTER FROM HARRY TRUMAN TO SECRETARY OF DEFENSE JOHNSON. This nationally important letter is typed on White House stationary with a printed heading that reads "THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON". The letter is dated September 26, 1949, and is addressed to the Honorable Louis A. Johnson, the Secretary of State. The letter addresses in six paragraphs the founding of the new German Federal Republic, "last Wednesday". Truman expresses his personal appreciation for the work of all military and civilian personnel in the founding of the new German Federal Republic in such a short time after the close of hostilities in 1945. He acknowledges that the U.S. military, and particularly the Army, confronted the nearly total destruction of Germany, along with famine and general chaos. He commends the Army for saving millions of Germans from death and starvation and closes with the sentence, "I am sure that history will find that the unprecedented relationship established between victors and vanquished has indeed strengthened the peace of the world." This truly historic letter is boldly signed in blue ink "Harry Truman". CONDITION: the letter remains crisp and undamaged in any way. (02-23298-5/BF). $1,000-2,000.
