GUNSMITH. Cal. 38. NSN. Bbl. 40" full oct. initialed "J.L." The percussion lock is marked "JOSEPH MANTON WARRANTED". The nicely curled stock has a 4 piece brass patchbox w/ Long's typical finial. The rifle has dbl. set triggers & 6 silver inlays along the bbl. There is a 5 1/2" brass saddle plate & a silver half moon inlay on the cheek. Joseph Long started in Union County ca. 1826 & in 1829 was assessed as a gunsmith in Adamsburg, Beaver Township. He is thought of as being the best known of all upper Susquehanna gunsmiths. This rifle was previously purchased out of the T.J. Cooper collection. CONDITION: fine & original throughout. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19669/RG). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
