KILLING CROSS.This early vampire killing or defense cross makes the hair stand up on your neck just being near it. Not only is it early and functional, but it shows wear and use. The wooden body measures 18 3/8 " x 12 3/8" and the base forms a point for a stake to be driven through the heart of the undead. At the intersection of the arms of the cross is a small 1 3/8" x 1 1/2" mirror used to detect the vampire, who has no reflection. The stake and arms are decorated with stars and scroll work and the centers of the stars as well as the corners of the cross are adorned with iron nails. The right arm is carved with the word "DEUS" and the left arm is carved with the word "VULT". This translates from Latin as "GOD WILLS IT". One of the most intriguing aspects of the cross are the carved bone topped spheres at the ends of the arms and the top of the cross. These are actually wooden pegs covering cylindrical openings that sequester 3 metal topped glass vials. The first opening is marked "A O" for allium oleum otherwise known as garlic oil. The second is marked "A B" for Aqua Benedicta also known as Holy Water. The third is marked "S O" for Sanctum Oleum better known as Holy Oil. All glass vials are intact with their original metal caps. Finally, the top of the cross pulls out revealing a 10 1/4" dagger of iron with a raised medial ridge and a cross stamped into the ricasso on the reverse. The blade would be of little use against a nosferatu, however it could be quite effective against an unfriendly familiar, thrall, or ghoul. It is difficult to convey the presence that this piece transmits. Please examine this relic of both the secular and non-secular past in person if possible. CONDITION: the cross is worn with a pleasing darkened patina in some areas. Internal vials are unbroken but some of the metal caps show oxidation. Iron nails are also oxidized and the wood has a 3" drying crack on the reverse side. The cross shows wear, and dare I say use, where a hand would grip it. (02-26824/BF). $3000-5000.
