SINGLE SHOT PISTOL. Cal. 48. NSN. Bbl. 12”. This beautiful long bbl. pistol measures 18” overall w/ striped, oct. bbl. Engraved “J. B. GILMORE” on top bbl. flat & lockplate. Mountings are engraved steel w/ exception of sm. oval thumbplate which is engraved w/ pelican feeding young below “JUSTICE”. Jerome Bonaparte Gilmore (1827-1900) was a famous Louisiana gunsmith whose firearms are quite rare & desirable. He was colonel of the 3rd Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War, was wounded at the battle of Iuka Sept. 19, 1862 & was captured at the battle of Vicksburg, July 4,1863. After the Civil War, Gilmore was mayor of Shreveport & an active member of the UCV. CONDITION: fine to excellent overall retaining most of its original brown striping on bbl. w/ muted case colors on lock, hammer & breech. Strong traces of fire blue are found on triggerguard. Stock retains virtually all its original varnish. Mechanically fine w/ crisp multi groove rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (01-20717/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
