RIFLE. 46.5” overall, 31” oct. swamped damascene barrel, finely engraved with sea creature, mermaid holding tablet inscribed “I BIVINS / FECIT / AD / 1979”, also signed by engraver “D. Goodwin Sculpt”. Breech has 3 gold poincons with raised initials of the 3 craftsman who made this 1979 masterpiece. Highly figured walnut stock is relief carved and silver wire inset along with finely engraved escutcheons opposite lock. Sculptured steel trigger guard and chisel engraved buttplate. John Bivins (1940-2001) was among the early high quality contemporary makers of historic arms, author, and museum curator. His guns rarely come to market. CONDITION: fine overall, Complete and original, bright steel, complete damascene surface to barrel, hi Polish stock has few scattered small blemishes on affecting the overall aesthetic.
