JUNIOR SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 22 Hornet. S# 27330 (67972). Bbl. 25 3/4" hand lapped (per consignor) heavy octagon to round with beveled target crown and custom made ventilated quarter rib. Left flat below rib is script engraved "22 Hornet" (in-the-white) over "The Workshop - St. Albans, Me." (done before bluing which gives a fine custom contrast). Custom creation by Judson Bailey who is a well known Maine custom gunsmith being renowned for his large caliber, custom African hunting rifles. This was a personal firearm with a tag on it stating that fact (required of firearms dealers to separate personal items from sales inventory). It has many custom features to include the vented quarter rib and a checkered thumb piece allowing removal of its superbly fitted forend. Stock is highly figured, high grade English walnut. Buttstock has a shadow line cheekpiece that continues its shadow line to the rollover portion on the reverse side. Solid Neidner style checkered buttplate with widow's peak. Ebony grip cap is fitted with walnut inletted center having a fleur-de-lis pattern. Fine checkering with curved borders to include additional fleur-de-lis. Forend is uncheckered having metal cap matching the receiver at its rear plus ebony forend cap with an integral fleur-de-lis "picture puzzle" inletted into its tip. Forend latch base plate has machined fleur-de-lis at each end and is inletted into the wood. Forend is almost flat on the bottom and of a semi-beavertail design. Very nice rust bluing with operating lever and breech block in-the-white. Fine custom steel scope rings appearing integral to the rib but with hidden attachments and slight machined shoulders at the bases to contain any recoil. Tops of rings have hexagonal configuration and 2 mounting screws per cap. Scope is a classic Lyman All-American 10X Perma+Center with crosshair reticle and adjustable objective. Top right front of the one piece receiver has "67972" plus "27330" just above the trigger on the right and on the top rear of action lockwork. The trigger guard has been narrowed at its front with a modern sporter profile rather than an original military configuration. Consignor states that bore was hand lapped achieving 1/2" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo. Fantastic small game or varmint rifle that was created by a master craftsman for his wife; a once in a lifetime offering. CONDITION: a long, careful look may yield a small handling mark but it is clearly near excellent overall to include its bore and optics. (25-2132/NW). MODERN. $3,500-5,500.
