RIFLE. Cal. 40-60 Marlin. S# 4902. High condition rifle with numerous special features. Bbl. 30" Heavyweight of octagon to round configuration. Records show 47 Half octagon barrels; as few as 2 of those were 30". Only 194 half mags. are listed in the records. German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight with elevator adjustable sporting rear sight. Standard weight action. Full blue finish. Extra long 11 5/8" walnut forearm. Straight grip walnut stock with Model 1881 style steel buttplate. Factory installed sling swivels. Shipped May 20, 1883. Weight: 10 lb 15 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Marlin Firearms Co letter stating the following: "Serial Number: 4,902/ Model: 1881/ Caliber:/ .40/60/ Barrel 30" Octagon/ Stock: / Magazine: 1/2 Magazine/ Special features:/ Date Shipped: May 29, 1883/ To whom shipped: Unknown/ PS: I have not examined an example of a model 1881 with an extra long forearm such as this rifle. The records make no mention of it. Upon removing the forearm, is there a hole through the barrel in the regular position for the cap screw?"/ WSB". It should be noted that Brophy's letter erroneously refers to the barrel as Octagon while the Marlin factory record does indeed state "1/2 Octagon". CONDITION: over 70% blue showing carry wear with freckling & scattered flaking on action. Wood has moderately worn finish showing numerous scratches, marks & small dents. Bore retains sound rifling.
