MAUSER ACTION SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 8x57mm JS. S# 3499. Bbl. 24". Sporting rifle built on a Mauser pattern action in Czechoslovakia by Waffenwerke Brunn (BRNO) in 1942 while under German occupation. The left side of the bbl. is marked with the S#, followed by a Czech Rampant Lion proof and the 2-digit year of mfg. "42", with the cal. designation stamped across the top of the breech. Left side of receiver is marked with matching Rampant Lion and "47" stamps to the bbl., followed by "WAFFENWERKE BRUNN/ AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT". Receiver ring features a matte crosshatched band, with the Brunn (BRNO) "Z" logo embossed over the chamber. Metal components exhibit a lustrous blue finish overall, with the bolt body and triggers remaining in-the-white. Checkered wood Mannlicher pattern stock with black plastic capped pistol grip, cheek rest, and horn schnabel tip forend. Buttstock is embellished with a band of carved oak leaves around the buttplate, with a portrait of a caribou carved on the left. Underside of stock is inlaid with an oval German silver escutcheon, forward of the floorplate. Spoon handle bolt with double set triggers and European style sling loops. Ramped blade front sight with 2-leaf rear sight graduated at 100 and 300 meters. LOP: 14 5/16". CONDITION: metal components retain bountiful amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting some scattered handling marks, some scattered flecks of light surface oxidation, as well as a small spot of mild wear and light pitting on the bottom edge of the bolt action. Muzzle crown exhibits a mottled gray patina, with an area of moderate pitting on the upper portion of the crown, as well as on the forward face of the front sight base. Bolt body and triggers exhibit scattered spots of age related discoloration, but otherwise are good overall. Brilliant mirror bore, exhibiting sharp and well defined rifling throughout. Stock exhibits marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise presents nicely. A very attractive example of a Czech World War II occupation produced sporting rifle. (24-633/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
