CONTRACT RIFLE & BAYONET. Cal. .58. NSN. Most collectors agree that this brass mounted rifle, w/ blued bbl & case colored lock is among the most beautiful of all Civil War arms. 10,000 of these were contracted by the US Ordnance Department August 1862, all 10,000 were delivered by January 1864. Often referred to as Remington Zouave rifle, no Zouave ever carried one & none saw Civil War service however. 49” Overall, 33” round bbl. w/ bayonet lug, 3 position adj. rear sight dated “1863” & “VP/Eaglehead” proved. Lock dated “1863”, “eagle/US” & “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.”. 2 Crisp inspector cartouches are found on stock opposite lock. CONDITION: extremely fine overall. Bbl. retains most all its factory blue finish, lock & hammer retain most of their muted case colors. Stock has areas of raised grain, sharp edges, scattered storage dings & dents. Brass has smooth light mustard patina. Mechanically crisp w/ bright shiny bore. Accompanying bayonet also in fine condition w/ partial leather scabbard, original throat w/ frog button. (01-19919/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
