1903 NRA MARKED BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 236474. Bbl. 24" Marked behind front sight on top "R.I.A." "flaming bomb" and "6-13". Marked underneath "C93", steel lot number & "P" proof. When a limited amount of model 1903 rifles were approved for sale to NRA (National Rifle Association) members around 1910 the first ones were not given any markings to distinguish them from government issued rifles. To save investigations when some of these rifles were found in dealers stocks it was decided to mark them as NRA sales. The mark was stamped on the forward end of the trigger guard tang. These rifles were sold by both Springfield & Rock Island Armories. The sale of these rifles was discontinued when America entered WW1 & production was needed for the war effort. The rear sight is graduated to 2850 yards & has "volley notch". Dished, knurled windage & elevation knobs. Blade front sight w/ blued stamped sight protector. The bolt w/ straight down handle is unmarked. Safety & cutoff letters have serifs. Grooved trigger. Fine checkered buttplate. Matching walnut stock set. Buttstock has crisp boxed script "C.N."& "1913". CN are the initials for longtime R I inspector Conrad Nelson. Encircled script "P" proof under grip along w/ sm. "L". Single stock bolt. Hand guard w/ 2 clips & sighting groove. Tan 1907 sling marked "MILSCO 1943". Free end of sling has been shortened. Sling is in good condition otherwise. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: very scarce original walnut spare parts container in butt trap. Container is complete w/ striker, firing pin & extractor. Parts & container show very light wear & slight loss of original finish. CONDITION: original finish stock set has light wear & scattered sm. handling marks, leaving a very attractive appearance w/ crisp legible markings. Metal work retains 90% original blue w/ light wear & tiny handling marks. Good shiny bore w/ very lightly worn lands. PROVANANCE: from the Estate of Thomas Mulligan. (23-1222/RW). CURIO. $2,500-3,000.
