WASHINGTON MORRILL, ABOLITIONIST, AND MEMBER OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. Cal. 44, S# 1609. Standard configuration of early 1863 made brass frame rifle, 14 shot integral magazine, "HENRY'S PAT. OCT.16. 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS. CO. NEW HAVEN. CT" roll stamped on top octagonal barrel flat. Rifle is in remarkable condition retaining most of its original finish. Rifle had been in Morrill family home for 6 generations, till sold in 1979 to David Condon. George Washington Morrill (1818-1886), his biography which has signed affidavit tells Morrill's history as anti-slavery politician and member of the underground railroad, industrialist, from prominent Massachusetts family. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: signed illustrated 3 page history of GW Morrill by James Morrill, 6th generation descendent. CONDITION: extremely fine, all original and matching, retaining 90% original blue finish to barrel, brass is smooth with staining, lever & hammer "uncleaned" with iron patina and light pitting, stock retains virtually all varnished finish, mechanics crisp, sharp rifled bore.
