“TUBE HAMMER” ALLEN & THURBER SINGLE SHOT PISTOL. Cal. 32. S# 16. Bbl. 3" oct. to round bbl., marked on 6 octagonal flats “ALLEN & THURBER” (top), “GRAFTON MASS”, “POCKET RIFLE”, “ALLEN’S PATENT”, “P. M. / E. A 1837”, & “CAST STEEL / WARRANTED”. This pistol is pictured in Jim Servin’s early 1964 text “The collecting of Guns”, page 129 credited to Phillip Van Cleave collection. According to Allen authority Paul Henry, this is one of only two tube hammer Allens extant in 2 screw sideplate configuration. PROVENANCE: ex- Phillip Van Cleave collection; ex Paul Henry collection 1989. CONDITION: good to very good overall complete & original, grip screw & hammer screw are replaced. Mottled iron patina, markings mostly discernible, grips refinished, well fit, mechanically functional, discernible rifled bore. Pistol is housed in a custom compartmentalized case lined w/ dark blue velvet w/ diminutive Sykes bag flask, & single cavity ball mold. (01-18619/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-2,000.
