8.25" Head, 2.5" cutting edge, marked with same dies used on their bowies: “SHEFFIELD WORKS” in arc above “J. ENGLISH / & HUBERS / PHILADELPHIA”. This example originated in the well known Jim Dressler collection. English & Hubers can be dated to mid 1830s, the 17.5" fire branded ash haft is in Plains style of the 1870s. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of provenance and John Baldwin letter of authenticity. CONDITION: very good overall, dark uncleaned patina, marking mostly discernible as can be seen in photos. Haft fits well with age crack, nailed at top as often seen for tightening for better fit. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18496/JS). $4,000-6,000.
