CAVALRY OFFICERS SABER. 33” heavy cavalry blade with unique 17” etched patriotic panels on either side including full firm marking not seen on another: “LEECH / & / RIGDON / COLUMBUS / MISS”. Leech & Rigdon renowned sword makers left the presentation panel blank as on so many, we don’t know who carried it. Less than 10 examples of this saber exist in any condition, and this is among the best few. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: bill of sale from Gary Hendershott stating ex-Fred Slaton collection. CONDITION: very good-fine overall, blade is gray with staining and 100% well defined etching, grip retains most all leather with chipping & age cracks, tight twisted wire wrap. Traces of gold on hilt with balance light mustard patina and verdigris. Scabbard is equally fine still retained wood liner that protects etching, smooth mottled gray/brown iron patina on body, mounts toned to medium mustard patina. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17229/JS). $40,000-50,000.
