EXPERIMENTAL BOLO BAYONET WITH SCABBARD. 1 of only an estimated 50 remaining Model 1915 experimental bolo bayonets remaining. Another iteration of the U.S. Army's attempts at creating a multi-purpose tool/weapon which would help reduce the overall weight a soldier had to carry in the field, with the thought of the Model 1915 being that it be utilized as both a bayonet machete for clearing brush in dense forest and jungle locations. The blade measures 15 1/2" in length, with the bayonet measuring 20 5/8" overall. The left side of the ricasso is stamped "SA/ (FLAMING ORDNANCE BOMB)/ 1916", with "US" over "4642" stamped on the right. Handle consists of a flat guard with a 2 piece smooth wood grip and unusually shaped "bird's beak" pommel. Unmarked canvas scabbard with canvas belt loop. CONDITION: Blade exhibits areas of cleaned pitting and dark discoloration overall, with some scattered nicks and small losses to the blade face. Handle shows some pitting. Grips show some minor marks from handling and storage, but are otherwise very good overall. Scabbard shows wear overall, with some tearing to the belt loop, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. An nice example of a seldom encountered and extremely scarce Springfield Armory Model 1915 experimental bolo bayonet. (02-19736/MLW). $1,000-2,000. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan.
