No. 1 FIGHTING KNIFE. Blade length is 7 13/16" w/ carbon steel blade w/ 1 1/2" sharpened false edge. Knife is 12 7/8" overall. Double sided curved brass hand guard. Smooth leather washer grip w/ red, white & black spacers at either end. Oval aluminum pommel w/ protruding hex nut which is drilled for a lanyard. Knife is marked on left side of blade "RANDALL MADE SPFLD. MASS." flanked by the trademark "RANDALL Scimitars". Unmarked brown leather sheath w/ white stitching & brown colored rivets. Sheath has belt loop, retaining strap & oil stone pocket. Oil stone includes original Norton Lily White Washita label. Randall knives have been produced since 1937 w/ the Springfield Fighting knife produced by North Hampton Cutlery Co. w/ design & proto type supplied by Bo Randall. This knife was produced in the late WWII period w/ approx. 1200 being made. One notable user of this Model Randall knife was General James Gavin, Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. Randall knives were mfg. starting in 1937 & the tradition of these extremely high quality knives continues today. CONDITION: blade appears to be very lightly sharpened w/ no significant scratches. Blade has several sm. areas of discoloration. Brass guard has turned a pleasing dark patina w/ very light edge ware. Leather handle has very light wear & scattered sm. handling marks. Pommel & nut are turning gray. Brown leather scabbard is in very good condition w/ very light wear & scuffing plus functional snaps & tight stitching. Original Oil stone has appearance of very light use w/ light staining & label is complete & legible. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18450/RW). $1,500-2,500.
