Cal. about 40. NSN. 28" octagon bbl measuring 1-1/4" across flats. The front of the bbl is rounded to accept a false muzzle. Top flat is stamped "F. NESTLE BALTO. MD". Globe style bead front sight. Custom large disc rear sight with windage & elevation adjustments is brazed to the original sight staff. Case colored lock, hammer & tang. Patent breech. Double set triggers. Half-length walnut stock has a pewter forend tip, sculpted cheek piece and checkered wrist. German silver Schuetzen style butt plate, ornate finger curl trigger guard, side plate and wedge escutcheons. "American Gunsmiths" by Frank Sellers lists Frederick Nestle, Baltimore, MD as a builder of percussion Schuetzen rifles, 1853-1884d. CONDITI0N: Bbl. shows 40% fading browned finish with scattered spots of corrosion. Lock, hammer & tang show some lightly visible case colors. Sound lock & trigger. Bright bore has strong rifling.
