HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44. S# 11228. This is a standard late production 5th variation Henry rifle made in 1866. Standard configuration of 5th variation ran approximately serial number 5000-12900. Pointed 2nd type butt plate with 3/4" trap door, .65" hole bored in the butt stock to accept iron 4-piece cleaning rod. Large trigger retaining pin .125" diameter, lever latch on lower receiver tang and latch flange on rear of lever, has a milled flat along the magazine follower slot in lower front of receiver, large magazine follower with 5/8" wide finger tab, square back front sight blade which is trimmed, slanted profile to stock comb, "Henry bump" not discerned, but stock appears lightly refinished, large 3.25" all serif barrel address, sight dovetail milled in barrel only, five groove rifling only noted on late guns, should have had 900 yard rear sight with slide stop screw but is missing, sling swivels on left side. Serial number stamped on following parts: barrel behind rear sight dovetail (re-engraved on this gun), left side of lower receiver tang, top receiver tang channel in butt stock, inside bottom edge of butt plate. Matching assembly numbers stamped on rounded portion of barrel under loading sleeve and on rear edge of loading sleeve. Factory Hoggson engraved scroll & floral design typical of all Henry production. In the 11000 serial range there are 18 documented factory engraved guns. CONDITION: very good overall, barrel and stock have both been lightly refinished, serial number on barrel has been re-engraved, otherwise rifle appears original and complete. Mechanically fine, sharp rifle bore with areas of pitting. (01-26383/JS). ANTIQUE. $15,000-20,000.
