SWORD, LT. MORRIS GIFFORD, LOUISVILLE LEGION. Patterned on model 1860 staff & field, 31” straight double edged blue & gold blade made by Pettibone is patriotically etched with 2 large presentation panels: Lieut. Morris B. Gifford Louisville Legion / From His Friends of the Louisville Bar”. Classical revival raised relief Roman soldiers in silver grip, raised relief lion’s head on knucklebow, with shield & stars on reverse. A silver washed snake coils around the top of knucklebow where terminating in relief decorated pommel. 2 huge 2” x 3” languets classical pierced decorated, inner one folds with locking spring. The steel scabbard is mounted with large raised relief classical figures, and reverse sides are finely engraved. Morris B. Gifford (1873-1935) 1st Lt & QM during Spanish American War and during WW1 Captain 336th Infantry and by war’s end Major in 78th Infantry. He was practicing attorney in Louisville most of his life. The Louisville Legion has long history as elite Louisville militia organization dating date to 1830s and still part of Kentucky National Guard today. You will find few Spanish American War presentation swords fancier than this. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of service records & bio. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, blade retains much of its original blue & gold backgrounds, etching all crip and discernible. Gold wash retained on brass hilt, pommel, and scabbard mounts, most all silver wash on snake and grip remains. Sword would sparkle with professional cleaning. (02-19276/JS). $2,000-3,000.
