Overall length: 36". Blade length: 30". A scarce example of an American officer's saber of the Federal period utilizing the Osborne eagle pommel. Henry Osborne produced many swords in Birmingham, England for the American market. This sword was imported by John Sayre of New York who was in business prior to the War of 1812. A single wide fullered blade w/ blue & gilt decoration on the lower third. Gilded decoration includes American shield, Liberty cap, cannon & various foliate motifs. The spine is stamped, "I S & CO" indicating the sword was retailed by Sayre. Brass guard & knuckle bow w/ disk quillon. The branch on the guard is missing or purposely removed. Eagle head pommel is of classic Osborne design. Grip is spirally fluted, certifiable antique ivory. Leather scabbard w/ a single central brass mount. Drag & throat are missing. CONDITION: blade has a heavily mottled oxidized finish. Bluing is discernable & gilded decoration is crisp & clear. As stated, guard branch is missing but the remainder of the hilt is strong. Grip is complete & shows only a few minor age cracks. Scabbard is substantially solid but has an electrical tape repair 5-7" above the tip. (02-16432/BF). $400-700.
