MUSKET, NATIONAL ARMORY PERCUSSION ALTERATION & BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. Springfield altered most of its 30,000 production of 1840 flintlocks manufactured, almost 27,000 were altered in 1851. This being one that saw little use and is in beautiful complete original condition. Alteration consisted of modification of lock, removing external battery components, and cutting and plugging pan, plugging vent, and drilling a new hole for cone near top of barrel, and adding new percussion hammer. Locking bayonet and trumpet head ramrod are of 1842 pattern. You can’t find one a whole lot better unless its unfired. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, smooth toned iron patina, pitting at breech, crisp lock markings, and very good barrel markings, matching “1842” dates on tang & lock. Stock is very good with raised grain, good cartouche, few scattered cosmetic blemishes. Mechanics crisp, clear dark bore. Bayonet fits well and matching condition to gun. (01-22767/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
