CAROLINA. Fine 1/6th plate Ruby Ambrotype measuring 3 3/8" by 2 3/4". Fully beaded Sowers is shown wearing Kepi, home spun frock coat w/ roller buckle belt, brandishing smooth bore musket. Oni Pinkney Sowers (1835-1903) enlisted as a 26 year old Private in the 18th North Carolina Infantry. The 18th North Carolina took part in most battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. Sowers was captured in May 1864 at Spotsylvania Courthouse & held at Elmyra prison until his release in June 1865. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter of provenance from descendant.
