This well preserved antebellum bowie measures 11” overall. 6 3/4” Blade, almost guardless w/ sm. protrusion of iron cross guard extends just past sharpened edge. Blade form is reminiscent of a few known American 1830s vintage knives. Grip is 2 wood slabs which covered almost full tang w/ 2 brass pins. Grip has been cross hatch carved w/ carving probably done w/ file through brass pins. Accompanying sheath appears original w/ tin liner & integral belt loop. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray, showing original tool marks. Tip of point chipped. Top edge of grip, long chipped exposing nearly full tang. Grip has hand worn patina. Sheath is sound & solid w/ scuffing & glued leather strip repair at top reverse of belt loop. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (02-16580/JS). $1,200-1,500.
