MILITIA STAFF SWORD, WASHINGTON LIGHT INFANTRY. 31” double edged blade with bright etched patriotic panels & “NP Ames / cutler/ Springfield”, decorated cruciform guard, knight’s head pommel, fancy chained guard, mother-of-pearl slab grips, engraved silver washed brass scabbard. Engraved on scabbard: “Presented to Sargt. Wm. H. Saunders / by the non-commissioned and privates / of the Washington Light Infantry Co. / K”.
William Hartshorne Saunders (1819-1857) MD from University of Pennsylvania in 1848, lieutenant in Washington Light Inf, Boston in 1850 probable date of presentation. Sauders was killed in Walker’s Rebellion in Nicaragua in 1859. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large binder of research. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, blade retains much of its original polish & luster, hilt retains strong trace of gold wash, chipped MOP slabs, scabbard has about 30% silver wash with balance patinaed.
