OFFICER’S SWORD. This unique Confederate pattern is considered by many collectors to be the most elegant of Confederate staff swords, finely etched blade w/ distinctive “ DEO / VINDICE” motto in wreath of corn & cotton along w/ panoplies of arms, flags & unique central panel “LIBERTY’S FRIEND”. The guard, which is only seen by this mfg. has wide, turned down counter guard w/ pierced high relief design w/ central “CS”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2001 letter of authenticity & bill of sale. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, original, complete & authentic. Guard slightly loose due to missing leather washer between blade & hilt. 29 1/2” Slightly curved blade has unstopped fuller, 21” etched panels, overall gray w/ areas of original luster, staining & light pitting. Maker’s mark “L. HAIMAN / COLUMBUS” is etched on ricasso under cross guard. Grip retains about 80% original leather w/ scuffing & reductions. Braided wire wrap is complete but has old break repair which is glued back in place. Original Haiman brass mounted scabbard. Brass once cleaned on hilt & scabbard mounts have mixed medium mustard patina. (02-15782/JS). $30,000-40,000.
