DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE. Cal. 500/450 Nitro. 3-1/4". S# 17926 (1905). Built just before the military caliber (.450) rifles were banned in the colonies resulting in production of .465, .470s, etc. This unrestored rifle is in a very highly regarded big game cartridge. The 26" chopper lump barrels are fitted with a quarter rib holding one standing two folding leaf express rear sights. A small white pyramid is glued beneath the "V" of the standing sight. Typical H&H style front ramp holds white front bead. Tops of barrels are engraved "Holland & Holland" "98 New Bond Street London." "Winners of all the Field Rifle Trials London". Barrel flats are stamp with London nitro proofs for 70 grains cordite and 480 grain bullet. S# is on the bottom of both barrels and splinter is extra heavy. Case hardened action with hand detachable back spring locks features non-automatic safety, ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), long top strap that extends over comb, hidden crossbolt third fastener, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, bushed strikers and double triggers. Engraving on action consists of small scroll borders with bottom engraved "Charge" "70 Grains of Cordite" "500/450" "Case 3-1/4 inches". Each lockplate is engraved "Holland & Holland". Takedown lever is engraved "Holland's Patent". Trigger guard has S# on tang which extends to steel trap grip cap holding spare front sight with flip-up night bead wrapped in paper that is printed "For 100 yds +" "Hold at 6 o'clock" "For 50 yds". Pistol grip buttstock made of well marbled and well figured European walnut measures 14-3/4" over red "Old English" pad on two 1/4" spacers. Stock features classic H&H style checkering and shadow line right hand cheekpiece, a vacant gold oval and sling eye are on toeline; matching eye on barrel. Matching splinter forend has pivoting lever release. MEASUREMENTS: WEIGHT: 10 lb. 2 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in period reddish canvas leather trimmed case; lined in dark green cloth. A silver embossed black leather label is in lid. A copy of the book "Buffalo Shot Placement and Trophy Evaluation" by Kevin Robertson. Gun is pictured with trophy Cape Buffalo on page 44 of this book. CONDITION: fine; unrestored. Barrels retaining most of their original blue with considerable hand wear and browning at normal carry points. Action and lockplates retain a good amount, perhaps 30% of their original case hardening color, the balance a smooth silver gray. Trigger guard and top lever retain traces of their original blue. A fair amount of case color is on grip cap. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish and show some added oil as maintenance over many minor marks and scratches. Checkering shows considerable wear but is still effective. Bores are bright and shiny with sharp, strong rifling throughout with some slight throat erosion evident in right barrel. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Mechanically fine. Lock internals are clean and bright. Case is rather tattered and is missing bits of leather trim. Handle is good, as is one strap, others missing. Interior cloth is fair to good with some tatters and shows lifting. Label is good. Simply a good solid double rifle. Consignor states he has shot three Cape Buffalo and won a number of shooting championships with this fine rifle. (25-3423/MGM). CURIO. $15,000-21,000.
