SWORD. Boyle & Gamble, Richmond, VA was the largest maker of officer swords in the Confederacy, finding beautiful "as found" examples however is rare. You will not find a more perfect & pleasing example in original scabbard of the pattern, wonderful brass patina, perfect scabbard leather, near perfect leather grip. Blade has especially long 3.5” flat ricasso showing forging “flaw” of iron tang blacksmith welded to steel blade, retaining protective leather washer so sword is tight. 15” etched patriotic panels include panoplies of arms on each ricasso, one with battleflag above shield with “CSA”. The original Boyle & Gamble scabbard is characteristic glued & sewn edge construction with pinned brass mounts and fits perfectly. CONDITION: fine overall, 29.5" blade retains much of its original luster, with staining and pinprick pitting, etched panels mostly discernable. Brass hilt & scabbard mounts have matching light/medium mustard patinas. Leather grip & single copper wire wrap are tight & complete except few well patinaed chips unaffecting aesthetic. Original scabbard is fine overall, retaining most of its original black polished surface with craquelure. (02-19422/JS). $7,000-9,000.
