REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 2894. Standard configuration, 4" octagonal barrel, correct "2-line New York City address with brackets", no provision for loading assembly, left side of frame has small "COLTS PATENT", silver plated square back brass trigger guard & backstrap, varnished walnut grip, 5-shot cylinder with rolled "Indian fight scene". This is Colt's first pocket sized revolver after the Paterson models. Housed in fine original early "Paterson style" bevel casing fitted with "COLTS PATENT" eagle flask, 2 cavity brass mold, Ely cap tin, and screwdriver/nipple wrench combination tool. These revolvers typically saw hard use and early examples like this one made in 1848 rarely have original Colt casings and strong original finish. This is a beautiful example with an excellent collection history. CONDITION: very good-fine overall, appears all original & matching throughout other than one replaced screw in grip frame. Metal has sharp crisp edges, crisp markings, strong traces of blue on barrel, traces of case color on hammer & frame, fire blue on trigger, about 25% original varnish, grip frame retains about 80% original silver plate. Walnut casing is equally very good with soiled and stained burgundy velvet lining, accessories good. Mechanically fine well-defined rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Bobby Smith 2000, Exemplary Colt collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-23982/JS). $8,000-12,000.
