OFFICER SWORD. This was the regulation sword for field grade officers, pierced floral &”US” decorated hilt, sharkskin grip with twisted gilded brass wire wrap. They had to buy their own swords and Ames was among best American makers who also had contract to supply this pattern to regular army. The maker’s mark is stamped on scroll on ricasso of 32” slightly curved blade, dating to the early Civil War “Made by / AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”. Blade is finely etched with patriotic motifs and Ames has etched address on opposite side which is unusual feature. Regulation blued steel scabbard with brass mounts, top ring mount also stamped with Ames & address. CONDITION: fine overall, blade retains most of its original polish & luster, complete grip, fine scabbard retaining most of it's thinning blue finish. Scabbard mounts, hilt, add pommel retain strong traces of gold wash. All-in-all this is very attractive regulation Civil War staff sword. PROVENANCE: Michael E. Bray estate collection. (02-19609/JS). $1,000-1,500.
