OFFICER’S SWORD. Rarely are found model 1860 staff swords that date from Civil War, even though regulation, a vast majority of officer’s preferred the heavier model 1850. Among the handful of identified 1860s, a couple to generals documented were French imports like this one. This one also has etched “SCHUYLER HARTLEY / & GRAHAM / NEW YORK” among the generic patriotic panels. On the folding languet, unknown officer’s name “RANSOM” engraved, shark skin and twisted wire grip, gold plated hilt and scabbard mounts, scabbard is nickel pated which is uncommon during the war. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, 31” double edge blade is gray, retains most of its gold wash and nickel plated scabbard body. (02-17662/JS). $800-1,200.
