BOX, CARTRIDGES & SIGNED CDV, MAJOR JOSEPH HOTCHKISS WHITTLESEY, 5TH US CAVALRY. Cal. 44. S# 44029. Standard configuration Colt model 1860 Army revolver made in 1862 for US Amry, along with holster and pistol cartridge box with early paper pack of pistol cartridges. Consignor stated all this came together along with signed CDV cut down to fit sixth plate tintype case. Revolver and accoutrements are all in very nice original condition. Joseph Hotchkiss Whittlesey (1821-1886) Born in NY, USMA graduate 1844, Mexican War 2nd US Dragoons, captain in 5th US Cavalry when war began, promoted to major November 11, 1861, captured at Gaines Mill and exchanged September 21, 1862, retired from field service November 30, 1863 due to exposure in prison and long field service. CONDITION: revolver is very good overall, complete & matching throughout, traces of finish in protected areas, sharp edges and markings, grips well fit with fair cartouches. Mechanically fine, good rifled bore. Pistol cartridge box is very good. Pack of 6 .44 cartridges very good, scuffed edges. Holster is sound and solid with repaired tab, craquelure, broken seam. Photo case has broken hinge, image is very good with good signature. (01-23027/JS). $3,000-5,000.
