SHOTGUN. Cal. 14 Bore. S# 1079. Consignor's notes indicate this fine gun was sold in 1849 to Lord Boyle Cape Hamilton, Bermuda. It has 30" laminated steel barrels with slightly raised game rib which is engraved with maker's name and address. Gun is #2 of a pair. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London black powder proofs; S#'s and barrel maker's initials "CL". Breeches are well filed and have platinum blowouts; one with vertical vent, the other a replacement. Breech iron is engraved with very well cut shaded scroll and small scene of game bird on a branch. Front spring locks with tall flat faced serpentine hammers are engraved with well cut open scroll on tails and bird scenes in front of hammers. "C. Lancaster London" is in scrolled device on each lockplate. Trigger plate has pineapple finial. Blued trigger guard has dog scene on bow and more birds on tang along with S#. Beautifully marbled and figured European walnut straight grip stock measures 14-1/4" over steel buttplate engraved with spaniel chasing a pheasant on long top tang. A vacant silver rectangle is at top of grip. Stock attaches to barrels with single side bolt through oval silver escutcheons and is checkered at grip and forend. An ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple thimble which is scroll engraved and has small bird scene. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .691. R .691. Barrels retaining over 85% original brown with pin prick pitting remaining after meticulous cleaning mostly on rib and tops of barrels. 70-80% case hardeneding color remains on breech plugs, iron and locks. Most of the original bright blue remains on trigger guard bow and about 60% remains on buttplate. Stock is very fine retaining over 90% original finish with a scattering of marks and scratches. Checkering remains light in color with little wear. Bores are good; shiny with light frosting throughout. Locks are crisp.
