Regulation Confederate general cap required four strands of gold braid and quatrefoil which this high quality cap possesses. This cap has no known identification and was long part of the Steve Mullinax collection. The cap has no lining, showing the construction not normally seen and crown is marked “general”. Leather visor, flat bullion chip strap, South Carolina side buttons.
Rarely do general’s caps come to auction. Poulin was the last and sold General Martin Luther Smith’s very similar cap in June 2020. This cap was cataloged & described by top Confederate dealer/collector Shannon Pritchard. His summary says it all: “Surviving Confederate headgear is extremely rare in any condition, but the extremely good condition in which this cap has survived places it in a category by itself. There is not the slightest hyperbole in stating that this is probably the finest condition Regulation Confederate General’s Cap in private hands.” UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Catalog descriptions from Shannon Pritchard and previous catalog with cap by Gary Hendershott. Custom plexiglass cube with wood base and stand for display. CONDITION: fine overall, body has light fading from its original dark blue, sound and sturdy. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17254/JS) $30,000-$35,000.
