BY BOYLE & GAMBLE OF RICHMOND VIRGINIA. Overall length: 37". Blade length: 30 7/8". Blade features an unstopped fuller & is etched throughout 2/3 of its length w/ a Confederate battle flag, the letters “CSA”, flags, trophies & foliate motifs. Coppery brass hilt has a “CS” w/ star cast in the guard w/ the standard ear of corn to the left as viewed. Somewhat crudely cast pommel & knucklebow. Single wire wrapped leather grip. Coppery brass mounted leather scabbard w/ 2 ring suspension. Scabbard has correct & original mts. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina w/ faint scattered mottling. The etching is a bit light & can be seen best in raking light. Hilt is tight. Details on hilt are crude but quite strong. Grip shows minor scuffing only & appears to be near 100% complete. Scabbard mts. show expected tarnish w/ minimum shallow dents. Scabbard body is worn & a bit flaked but remains quite solid & even a bit pliable. An extremely fine example of one of the best known Confederate staff & field swords by one of the South’s most accomplished & prolific makers.
