VAN HORN. Cal. 358 Norma. S# PH222. Gil Van Horn began stocking rifles for Roy Weatherby during the 1950's. His styling harkens back to that era. During later years he was known for his interest in African big game rifles and he designed a number of wildcat cartridges in the Van Horn Express category. This rifle with 24" medium weight sporter barrel without sights is engraved "G. VAN HORN-RIFLEMAKER-L.A., CALIF." on top; caliber is at left rear. Model 98 large ring Mauser action has S# on left side of receiver ring. Bridge has been lowered and a Buehler one piece scope base is installed. Bolt has lowered handle and is engine turned. Bolt shroud is fitted with Buehler safety. A commercial trigger is installed. 1909 Argentine bottom metal has had release button enlarged. Pistol grip stock of nicely figured and streaked Claro walnut measures 14" over red old English pad. Stock features slight Monte Carlo comb, swept shadow line cheekpiece, rosewood grip cap and forend tip, stock reinforcing bolt and sling studs. Checkering is exceptionally well cut in borderless point pattern at about 20 lines per inch. CONDITION: very fine with some handling marks. Metal retaining nearly all custom blue finish with some light scratches, mostly on trigger guard bow. Stock retains nearly all of its original rubbed oil finish with a number of scratches mostly on left side above trigger guard. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. (22-5789/MGM).
