This spontoon measures 74" overall with an 11 1/2" head and a 6 3/8" blade. The head has a blade above a socket with a lower annular ring. Below the ring are short ears measuring 1 3/4". The full-length haft appears to be oak, and there is a ferrule and spike at the base. This spontoon comes with an oral history of being from Connecticut. The ears of the spontoon are marked "CONN" and "1849" in a manner indicative of a historical society. This spontoon, in our opinion, likely dates from the late 18th to the early 19th century. CONDITION: iron has a pleasing gray, lightly oxidized patina. Wood has an original, mellow patina. It does appear that originally the ears on the side were longer and possibly shortened at an arsenal. (02-23288/BF). $400-600.
